Portraits Podcast 42 w/ Andrew Aragon (part II):
He’s baaaackkk. Andrew returned to finish something we began in our last chat; this episode is specifically themed to cover the topic of atheism. I invited Andrew back on to speak on the subject. As someone who holds to Christianity, I think it’s important to have conversations and listen to people who have beliefs that differ from yours. I wanted to hear an unbiased perspective from someone who doesn’t believe in God and why they don’t. This is not a debate. We know where our differences lie & have open conversation about that. But for this specific conversation, it is one friend listening to another. I love and appreciate Andrew a whole ton and can’t thank him enough for sitting down and sharing. Listen with open ears, a willingness to be challenged and never stop pursuing truth.

Portraits Podcast 41 w/ John Logie:

Wild story, John and I have actually met before a few years back through mutual friends. You know when you go somewhere and someone brings a friend and you say hi and then never see them again? I never thought we’d eventually be friends, much less podcast together. Yet here we are. You can hear a bit more on that in our conversation. It was great getting to set aside some time and just chat. John is insightful and just a wonderful human being. We sat down and talked about the dynamic of friendship, Star Wars and the slow movie conundrum.

Portraits Podcast 40 w/ Sam Resendiz:

It’s been a little bit. Life has a way of picking up speed and before you know it, 3 weeks have passed since your last recording. Had the pleasure of hanging out and chatting with Sammie. Sam and her sister Tiff (who was the 2nd guest on portraits!) came by a couple weeks back to figure out some recording info. Sam is looking to start her own podcast! Focus your eyes on the horizon, she has some great things up her sleeve. We sat in a cold but pleasant smelling garage and talked about her podcast ideas, relationships and of course Beyoncé.

Portraits Podcast 39 w/ Denise Martinez:

Denise is one of the hardest working people I know. She is a teacher and dedicates herself to what she does. It’s admirable. Her focus is on music and she’s an amazing flutist (among other things). Also, I’ve seen her conduct an orchestra and let me tell you, even though I know it requires so much skill, she makes it look so darn easy. We talked about finding the balance between hard work & rest, music as an outlet, and ghosts.

Portraits Podcast 38 w/ Andrew Eastman:

Here we are, post-Cor. Last year, an idea start with Andrew entitled Cor and over the next few months, it grew into something none us of dreamed it could. And not just end product. But the journey getting there as well. So many friendships made. What a lovely bunch. I had the opportunity to hang out with Andrew and unwind. This is actually our 2nd attempt at recording an episode. The first time I was still learning and badly recorded the first half while completely losing the second. But it was fun nonetheless. This time the entire episode made it through to the other side. We sat in a dark garage talking by candlelight about friendship, community and the power of dance.

Portraits Podcast 37 w/ Max Heilman:

Max is an all around talented human being. I met him when he played drums for a band called Plants. It was their first show and they killed it. He also writes about music for various publications. And my goodness, he knows his stuff. I really enjoyed getting to hang out with him. We also found out we share an enjoyment of watching movies that are so bad, they’re entertaining. Make sure you check out and support his ventures! They’re all conveniently linked on his website, which can be accessed from his Instagram bio. In this episode, Max and I talked about the appreciation of music, Tooth & Nail and Thor: Ragnarok.

Portraits Podcast 36 w/ Isaiah Parra (part II):

Isaiah is one of the realest. Not only one of my greatest friends and brother, but an incredibly genuine and thoughtful human being all around. All filters and fears disappear when we hang out and my appreciation for that is unending. Without people on the podcast, there would be no podcast. Without Emily & Kelsea of Creeper Magg, the podcast wouldn’t be anywhere near what it is. And without Isaiah, I never would have mustered up the confidence to think this project was even worth pursuing. So here we are hanging out and chatting again. We talked the intimacy of music, a touch on love and thoughts on death.

Portraits Podcast 35 w/ Vanessa Palmer:

Fun fact, Vanessa has actually been on the podcast before as a couch guest on the very last episode of season 1. She hung out as Chase and I chatted. But that didn’t count so I asked her to come back. And it was cool catching up! She a very well spoken, multi-talented human. Vanessa studies communication, has her own Etsy shop, and taught me the difference between being vegan and vegetarian. We chatted about words, idiosyncrasies we inherit from our parents and mushrooms.

Check out Vanessa's Jewelry and support her ventures!

Portraits Podcast 34 w/ Jason Smart:

Jason and I have quite a bit in common. We enjoy watching movies, creating things and sometimes (aka often) feeling insecure despite our abilities to do so. It was great getting to take some time of our day and just have an honest conversation with each other. Jason works in motion graphics and although we didn’t talk about it on the podcast, is also a skilled musician. Seriously, the dude can play. It was just a joy getting to know him better. We talked about Michael Bay, the value of art and imposter syndrome.

Portraits Podcast 33 w/ Tylor Steelman:

The first memory I have of Tylor is seeing him do standup a couple years back for an Echavox set in Tristan’s backyard. That was the first night I met both Tylor and Andrew Eastman. A monumental night. I never knew how intertwined my life would become with so many humans that evening. (As a side note, that’s also the night I recall meeting Isaiah Parra, who was the very first guest on this podcast; I didn’t realize how many solid friends I made at that show until now). The first impression most people get of Tylor is that he’s a funny. And he is, very much so. And as you spend time with him, you also get to see how thoughtful he is. He’s creative and that comes out in all he’s involved in. He has a podcast of his own called “Del Talko” in which he visits different Del Tacos with friends & talks about the experience and then some. We recorded an episode of Del Talko before recording Portraits so be sure to check it out on iTunes along with his other brilliant episodes! (Our ep. is entitled “The Ghost of Mr. Del Taco). Tylor and I sat down and talked about breathing life into ideas, our scary stories and different variations of fries.

Also, be sure to check out Tylor's podcast, "Del Talko"

Portraits Podcast 32 w/ Carla Veliz:

Carla is someone I just enjoy having a conversation with. Her contemplative way of navigating ideas and thoughts is always honest. She has a quiet wit that can drip sarcasm if need be, but is also one of the kindest, sweetest humans you’ll meet. Seriously, she has a wicked sense of humor if you just pay attention, especially her side comments. They’ll make your day. Also, Carla’s singing skills are unreal. My goodness, her voice is amazing. We sat down and talked about how she started performing in public, the freedom music can bring, and what it’s like growing up.

Portraits Podcast 31 w/ Alex Castañeda:

A while back I went to Six Flags with some dear friends. I was introduced to someone that would be joining us. I was told we’d get along because we have similar interests. Enter Alex. We chatted along the way, and there, and back again. We got along just fine. Alex lives and breathes movies, as do I. We both enjoy the adventure of being transported into the imagination of another, even if only for a small window of time. So naturally I invited him to come watch movies & podcast sometime. Which we did. We watched Night of the Hunter then went into recording this. We talked about how our love of movies started, his aspirations, and beautiful mistakes

Portraits Podcast 30 w/ Sister Todd:

Chatting with a band creates a fun dynamic. It’s almost like talking to a three headed person. There’s a passion that ties them together but it’s fun to see where each end veers off. I sat down with Rob, Elijah and Jesse for some enjoyably banter. They are a fun bunch. And they gave me a demo that’s been added to the end of the episode so you can hear the music they create together! We talked about their influences, where their name derives from, and oh yea, the Pixies.

Portraits Podcast 29 w/ Devin Castro:

I met Devin filming stuff for Cor. We were recording stuff together before we even knew each other that well. Now here we are full circle, recording together (albeit in a different sense) but knowing a bit more about the other. Devin is a creative one. He helped create the costumes and masks for Cor, he records his own music, and is constantly looking for new projects to complete. We talked about Texas, Bang-Bang's and Zooey Deschanel

Portraits Podcast 28 w/ Sara Montoya:

I connected with Sara because of Creeper Magg. I'm really so happy and thankful for the community Emily and Kelsea have been creating with their magazine for people with a heart for art. After an interview CM did with Sara, I became a fan of her work. And after talking with her, I can see how much time and effort she has put into crafting her art. It shows. She's not only a skillful artist, but also a lovely human being. We chatted about her artistic beginnings, social media and the importance of conversation.

Portraits Podcast 27 w/ Janelle Natividad Paule:

I sat down with poet and Yelp enthusiast Janelle Paule for an in depth discussion about her life. We had hung out a couple times briefly so it was great having the time to chat and learn about each other. Janelle is hilarious and insightful. It was a blast. We talked about her event organizing days, millennial slang and Tumblr (but don't tell anyone).

Portraits Podcast 26 w/ Greg Poblete:

I sat down Greg for a chat. Yes, THAT Greg. Comedian, DW guitarist and YouTube star. What a way to kick off season 2 of the podcast. I met Greg when our bands played together. His band, Desert Woman, knows how to get a crowd moving and are masters when it comes to song covers. I haven't seen a band do it better. We sat down in my newly converted recording garage and tried it out. It was hot, so towards the end, the room was incredibly stuffy and as a result, we were sluggish. But it was still a good time as well as a learning experience. We talked about comedy, the start of DW and writing.
