Fun fact: Danny is the only person I've ever met who guessed how to pronounce my last name right on the first try. I met him at Chain Reaction when his band Nature of the Pure played through there. His vocals are as smooth as his speaking voice. He has a way with words few others do. His humor is dry, his wit sharp, and his heart is gold. We talked about Brand New, wordplay, and the voice he developed for his music.

Had the chance to sit down to Sarah and talk about her life! She is a teacher who knows how to mix creativity and watching a bunch of kids at once. In this episode, we talked about kids movies, her travels, and our church.

I met Novak years ago when we went to the same youth group. He’s always been a charming personality. On top of that, he skates, takes photos, and is very perceptive. Though I don’t get to see him as often as I did, when we do hang out, it’s nothing less than a joy. In this episode, we talk about the value of what we create, photography, and the current climate. Novak also made me tear up at the end. Such a beautiful human.

Naomi is wonderfully layered (as all humans are) but the word that comes to mind when I think of her is kindness. If you don’t feel welcome, she’ll make sure you do. We talked about Naomi's Japanese and Mexican culture, love languages, and growing up in church. Also, Naomi is in Japan right now! We recorded this about a week before she left on her lengthy voyage there.

Ceasar has the art of conversation down. Ever since I’ve known him, I’ve always enjoyed talking to him. Tangents galore. Ceasar is a great communicator and has an ability to listen to both sides of anything carefully. In this episode, we talk about the Freedman's Bureau, finding the place to love others, and being open to being wrong.

Beth is such a creative force. She has an eye for photography and captures moments well. She works hard, in both her freelance jobs, as well as her passion project @whittierwandering. On top of that, she's just a lovely human being who reminds people of their worth. We talked about her journey in photography, how she met her husband Kyle, and the idea behind what makes certain photographs timeless.

One of the most solid humans I know. If you sit with him and listen, you'll be taught so much. I've had some of most genuine conversations of my life with Jesse. He can take you to a thoughtful place, then out of the blue say something hilarious and crack you up. He's dynamic, sharp, and always looking to better himself and those around him. You can't ask for something better in a friend. We talked about his roots in Huntington Park, barriers we create, and theology.

When I hang out with Karol, I know my sides are going to hurt. Her wit is sharp and laugh is contagious. She's also great at getting to know the core of who you are. We literally met 3 months ago but there was no time wasted on small talk; she makes you feel comfortable right off the bat. This was a fun one. We talk about her YouTube days, the education system, and women being pastors.

Portraits Podcast 17 w/ Alan Munoz:

Alan is a talented musician and sharp human. He is highly influenced by sci-fi and ideas that stem from that. It was a blast talking to him about implications of technology and what that says about us as humans. He is also one of the sweetest and kindest people you’ll meet. I have to listen to these podcasts after their done, and his voice is relaxing. Also, he guest edited this episode! Hence the much better sound. We talk about technology, influences, and the power of art

Portraits Podcast 18 w/ Sara Mawcinitt:

This episode delves deep. Sara is transparent and incredibly raw. In the time that I've known her, she's challenged me to be more myself, to lower the mask I'm tempted to put on in front of others, to show who I am and how that's shaped me. She's courageous, tough, and caring. The first two characteristics can intimidated people to the point of missing the last part that underlies it all; Sara is a lovely human being. As a word of warning, the subject of rape is discussed for a moment. This is, understandably, something very difficult to even listen to for some. It's discussed between 0:56-1:08 if you want to avoid it. We also talk about wrestling with religion, getting to know the core of a person, and trust.

Portraits Podcast 19 w/ Chad Carlstone:

A wordsmith by trade, Chad is a joy to talk to. He walks through a conversation using paths seldom traveled. He also happens to be a very genuine human being, making the journey that much more enjoyable. I'm glad Chad crossed my path and we bonded over diner coffee. There are other things, but that's the glue that holds our friendship together. This episode also features a live spoken word piece Chad was gracious enough to perform at like midnight after we recorded the podcast. We talk about comedy, opinions and finding common ground with those we disagree with.

Portraits Podcast 20 w/ Omar Trujillo:

I met Omar around November when I moved out. He is my neighbor. He is very outgoing and made the introvert in me feel comfortable right away. I am so fortunate to live next to people who are not only friendly, but really make me feel welcome in a pre-existing community. Anything you can hope for in a neighbor, Omar is. Something he said during our talk that really stood out to me is when I asked what makes a good neighbor. Omar said we should accept your neighbors. We also talked about his having to live with CF, the importance of being an organ donor, and looking for our purpose in life.

Portraits Podcast 21 w/ Andrew Aragon:

I met Andrew through Cor. It's incredible how that project created such solid friendships. Andrew is one of the most chill and respectful humans you'll ever meet. I don't think I've ever seen him get even slightly mad. It's always an absolute joy when our paths cross. We talk about hospital visits, music, and respecting difference of belief.

Portraits Podcast 22 w/ Phil M. Sanchez:

Phil is the first person to come on the podcast that I didn't know, at least not personally. I met him briefly once before, only exchanging names. He is my friend Krisandra's dad. She spoke highly of him & his stories and I was intrigued. I jokingly said that he should be on the podcast. She flew with it and made it happen. And what an honor it was to talk with Phil.  He has 82 years of life experience under his belt. He spoke softly but each word held weight. We talked about the jobs he's had over the years, his love of cooking, and what he found to be most important in life

Portraits Podcast 23 w/ Casey Lewis Cox:

I think it's fair to say I wouldn't have a good chunk of people I now have in my life without Casey. I met him at a backyard show and he started popping up in random places after that. Our paths kept crossing. He invited me to a church just starting and I was reluctant. I wasn't looking to go back to church. I was done with church but he kept inviting and I reluctantly went. And I met people who lovingly helped with my questions, my doubts, my hurts and my pains. All that to say, Casey is a good networker and an even better human being. He genuinely cares for the well being of those around him. We talk about his passion for music, the Bureau, and Ryan & Micah.

Portraits Podcast 24 w/ Ginny Shneider (part II):
It's always a pleasure chatting with Ginny. The last time she came on we threw around the idea of having a themed podcast. And intended to do that with this one. But we went right into it just seeing where it went and then went into the subject of Harry Potter and the backlash it received from some religious circles. In addition to that, we talked about Fargo, what makes a good tv show, and how good horror & comedy are similar.

Portraits Podcast 25 w/ Chase Pike:

This episode is special to me. I met Chase literally a couple minutes before the interaction you hear on the podcast. Kelsea (of Creeper Magg) sent me his contact info and I texted a stranger to come over my house. When he walked back out the door after the podcast, he was my friend. You get to hear that first conversation shared between two humans. I'm glad I was able to spend time with Chase, as well as Vanessa who also joined the fun (planning on podcasting with her in the future!) We talked about the importance of conversation, human interaction and our mutual disinterest in the Beatles.
